[388] A drunk stumbled out of the
Metropole Hotel, fell into a cab and
told the driver: "Take me to the
Metropole."
"We're there," said the cabbie.
"OK," said the drunk, taking a 5 dollar
bill from his wallet, "but next time
don't drive so fast."
[389] An Englishwoman and her young son
took a taxi in New York. Driving through
a run-down district of the city, the boy
was fascinated by the women in short
skirts and tight tops who were accosting
men.
"What are those ladies doing?" he asked
his mother.
The mother was embarrassed. "1 expect
they're lost and are asking for
directions."
But the taxi driver interrupted: "Hey,
lady, why not tell the kid the truth!
They're prostitutes."
"What are prostitutes?" asked the boy.
"They're women who sell their bodies,"
replied the mother, still angry at the
taxi driver's outburst.
"Do they have children like other
ladies?" asked the boy.
"Yes," said the mother icily. "Their
children become New York taxi drivers."
